The Hunter Wildfires are pleased to announce the signing of three high-calibre international players: Mesu Kunavula, Daniel Maiava, and Elisapeta Alofipo. Their experience and talent will add depth to the squad as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
Mesu Kunavula, a Fijian powerhouse, stands at 195 cm and 125 kg. A Sevens specialist with a Commonwealth Games silver medal, he has played for Edinburgh Rugby, Brive, and most recently, the NSW Waratahs. A versatile flanker/lock, Mesu is expected to bring physicality and skill to the Wildfires’ forward pack when not on Super Rugby duties with the Waratahs.
Daniel Maiava was a regular starter for the Melbourne Rebels in the 2024 Super Rugby season, demonstrating his consistency at the elite level. With additional experience playing for Southland in New Zealand, he brings a strong work ethic and reliability as a lock/flanker.
Elisapeta Alofipo adds international pedigree, having represented Samoa in both XVs and Sevens. A dynamic and fast-paced backline player, he will be a valuable attacking asset, bringing creativity and speed to the Wildfires’ game.
“Bringing in players of this calibre is an important step for us,” said Head Coach Darren Coleman. “We’re focused on building depth and continuing to raise our standards by introducing quality players with experience at the Super Rugby and international levels. Mesu, Daniel, and Elisapeta are not only talented athletes but also hard workers and great fits for our squad culture here in Newcastle. We’re excited to see them contribute on and off the field.”
